Aunty Ivy was the oldest girl in the Sukhdeo family after an elder sister, Renee, died at the age of 21. As an older child she assumed some of the burdens of taking care of a family of 9 children and 4 adopted children going off to work when she was quite young.
She got married and was living in Canal No2. It was a far way and we rarely saw her. Once a year, she would come with her family to the manse at Better Hope spending a couple of weeks with her brothers, sisters and their families.
I got to know Aunty Ivy, when she and the family moved to Mahaica.Uncle Sarju, like many teachers, sought job advancement by taking a series of promotions at schools in the diverse parts of the country. He relocated his family to Mahaica and taught at schools in Mahaica, Mahaicony and Mahaicony Rivers During these periods he lived away from home and the weight of maintaining the house fell on the shoulders of Aunty Ivy who undertook many physically demanding jobs that the male would perform. She would be fetching loads on her head, forking the garden and repairing the fence. When we visited her, she would have that weary smile on her face but would never complain and would be unfailingly hospitable, offering us food and drink.
Being the eldest, she was the closest to her parents. During the Christmas visits both she and my grandmother would be in deep conversation using each other to unburden themselves.
Aunty Ivy honored her parents and addressed them respectfully. In one of my last visits to her apartment when she was mentally declining, she offered to sing a song as we were leaving.
The name of the song was “When you and I were young Maggie”. This was a favorite of my grandfather, many times when he had a drink and his spirits were high, that was the way I recall him singing that song addressing it to my grandmother who was often dismissive - embarrassed by his exuberance.
Our condolences to her children Michael and Elaine, Rosie, Violet and Patsy and Kampta, grandchildren and great grandchildren. We will always be inspired by her love for you and how she fiercely struggled to give you a better life. May you be comforted by her memory and find the strength to carry on.
Aunty Dolly, Son, Jenny and Family.
