Obituary of Leyland Paul Gudge

Leyland Paul Gudge was born in Georgetown Guyana on June 27, 1948 to the late Elsa and Leslie Gudge and he departed this life On Saturday April 30, 2022. He attend Sacred Hearth R.C School and Critchlow Labor College In Georgetown, Guyana and worked at the YMCA Georgetown in the position of Executive Director and was instrumental in pioneering change initiatives which resulted in ending the historic religious and gender discrimination that characterized the earlier years of the YMCA. Leyland migrated to Canada in 1972 and held many positions in the Social Service field where he was instrumental in developing Child Welfare Diversity Programs with a focus on at risk children. Leyland was the first Black person to be appointed a tribunal member of The Province of Ontario’s Child and Family Services review board. He was also the co-founder and designed Harambee Child and Family Services,and he was a founding member of the Black Community Relations committees involved with the Police Services in both Toronto and York Region. Leyland holds an Undergraduate Honors Degree from York University as well as a M.S.W Degree from The University Of Toronto. Additionally, he holds certificates in Public And Labor Relations. Leyland is listed in The National Directory titled, Who Is Who In Black Canada. He enjoyed listening to music, reading and watching CNN. Leyland is survived by his wife Claudette, Children Odelia, Christopher and Leslee. His Sisters, Patricia, Pamela, Jeune, Antoinette, Donna and a late Brother Leslie Jr. Grand Children Tatyana, and Khai, Nieces: Ingrid and Susanne Gudge; Nicole McBean; Marsha Capoluongo; Natalie Augustus; Nephews John McBean Jr; Jeffrey James. Father-In-Law to Eylon Zemer. Family and friends will be received at COVENANT FUNERAL HOME, 2505 Eglinton Ave E, Scarborough, ON M1K 2R1 on Friday, May 13, 2022 from 1 – 7p.m. Funeral Mass Will be celebrated on Saturday, May 14, 2022 10:00a.m at St. Thomas The Apostle Roman Catholic Church, 14 Highgate Drive, Markham, ON L3R 3R6.
