Tribute in Honour of Ansel Johnson AKA Plough: A close friend, natural leader, gentleman and indeed a fallen Soldier.
Firstly, let me express the shock I felt when I learnt of the passing of my childhood friend.
To Serena and the Johnson family please accept my sincere and heartfelt condolences at the passing of Ansel.
It felt just like yesterday that I sat in the same bench at Sunday school with Ansel at the Old Harbour Bay Baptist Church. This was a weekly feature of our lives throughout the 1960s and early 1970s with the great teacher and local folklorist Arthur Harrison (Mass Arthur).
Born in Old Harbour Bay St. Catherine, Jamaica in the year 1956, we both started primary school on the same day, September morning 1963. He sat the row of benches running parallel to where I sat. He was the pride and joy of his mother Miss Daphnie. Ansel was always immaculately dressed for school and Sunday school and this attitude spans his entire life. He was a family man who never showed any form of disrespect to his family. His little sister (Brigitte) and Father Mass Lyn were very dear to him. We both lost our mothers a very tender age.
We went on to Old Harbour High School, (Formerly, Old Harbour Junior Secondary School) there we continued our close friendship. We were always together, getting into boyhood mischief with the girls, teachers and ancillary staff. One of those girls he later married and remained faithful until death.
There we played well on the field during the cricket football and track & field seasons. Ansel loved sporting activities, even more so the sport of Kings. A true gentleman indeed, full of valor, panache and always well groomed.
From time to time we would break away and go to the dance hall and danced to the great songs of the early 1970s. Yes, the music of Prince Jazzbo, Hugh Roy, I Roy, King Stitch, Johnny Clarke, John Holt, Dennis Brown and Horace Andy. Ansel enjoyed doing the dancing style “Crab Walking” You should see him in all his glory dancing away to Horace Andy’s song Skylarking and Hugh Roy’s S 90 skank while wearing his infamous “gun mouth pants and Clarke's uppers, Rasta belt and buttons.”
He late migrated to Canada but our friendship remained unbroken. Whenever Ansel visited Jamaica, we had great times together, eating, drinking, laughing and chatting away about our childhood days. He was a forthright and honest guy who was very kind, well-mannered and jovial. Very rarely you would see him get vexed, but when he does he was almost unstoppable. He was indeed a friend and a very faithful son of Old Harbour Bay. Walk good my friend. We will certainly miss you. RIP

I would like to hereby seize this opportunity to first convey my deepest condolences to the Johnson’s family. The very distinguished and dignified gentleman who was affectionately known to me personally as “Sir Ansel Johnson”, an attribute that all those of you, his family, close friends, admirers and others that truly knew him will also no doubt hastily attest to, is regrettably no longer with us; but only in his physical body. Yes he may be missing from us in the flesh/body but definitely not in the spirit – for in our minds his memory will forever live on. Theodore Roosevelt is alleged to have said “Nobody cares how much you know, until they know how much you care” and from my personal experience with Sir Ansel, especially during one of my most challenging times in life here in Canada while being one of his street neighbors, has made me felt and knew that he cared. His very caring, comforting and characteristically soothing and soft spoken voice (in my case) “waa gwaan Jonesie?”coupled with his effortless gestures of kindness towards his friends and associates will forever be with us. May his soul find Rest and Peace among our Most Honorable Ancestors. Ashe, Ashe, Ashe. I am The Mystic Philosopher aka Dr. David G. Jones PhD.
